What is Deep Pressure Stimulation? The Comfort Behind Weighted Products

What is deep pressure stimulation, and why can weighted products feel so comforting? Explore the science behind weighted comfort, what current research says, and how Hugglz® brings gentle weight and warmth together in a soft, huggable companion.

Have you ever noticed how a firm hug, a heavy blanket, or curling up under several layers can make you feel a little more settled?

There’s a name for the type of sensory input created by gentle, evenly distributed pressure: deep pressure stimulation, sometimes called deep touch pressure.

It’s one of the ideas behind weighted blankets and other weighted comfort products. But what exactly is deep pressure stimulation, and what does the research actually tell us about weighted comfort?

What Is Deep Pressure Stimulation?

Deep pressure stimulation refers to firm, sustained pressure applied to the body. It can come from something as familiar as a hug or from products designed to provide weight or compression.

Weighted blankets are one of the most commonly researched examples. Researchers have studied whether this type of pressure may help people feel calmer, more comfortable, or better able to relax.

The research is encouraging in some areas, although it is still developing.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis examining weighted blankets in people with psychiatric disorders found an improvement in anxiety symptoms among participants using weighted blankets. The researchers also cautioned that the existing studies were relatively small and varied in their methods.

Why Can Weight Feel Comforting?

Think about the difference between someone lightly brushing your shoulder and receiving a long, reassuring hug.

They feel very different.

Deep pressure provides broader, more sustained sensory input. Many people describe weighted pressure simply as grounding, cozy, or comforting.

That doesn't mean a weighted product is a treatment for anxiety, insomnia, or another medical condition. But research suggests that weighted pressure may be a useful comfort and relaxation tool for some people.

For example, a 2024 randomized controlled trial involving adults awaiting elective surgery found that participants given a warm weighted blanket reported significantly lower preoperative anxiety than participants given a traditional sheet or nonweighted blanket.

Research into sleep has also produced some promising findings. A 2024 review of weighted blankets as a sleep intervention found more evidence of benefit among adults, while results for children and adolescents were more mixed. Researchers continue to emphasize the need for larger, higher-quality studies.

Weighted Comfort Doesn't Have to Mean a Huge Blanket

Weighted blankets aren't the only way to enjoy the cozy sensation of added weight.

That's part of the inspiration behind Hugglz®.

We wanted to combine the familiar comfort of a soft stuffed animal with gentle weight and soothing warmth in something that's easy to hold.

Each Hugglz weighted stuffed animal weighs approximately 2 pounds, giving it a substantial, comforting feel when held in your arms or placed on your lap.

And because comfort isn't one-size-fits-all, Hugglz can be enjoyed in several ways:

Weighted — approximately 2 pounds for a substantial, comforting feel.

Warmable — remove the heat/cold pack and warm it according to the product instructions for cozy warmth.

Coolable — the removable pack can also be chilled for cooling comfort.

Washable — remove the heat/cold pack and the plush outer cover can be machine washed.

Unscented — Hugglz use clay beads rather than scented flaxseed or grain fillings.

When Might You Reach for Weighted Comfort?

Sometimes you don't need a complicated routine. You just want something comforting nearby.

A weighted plush can become part of everyday moments such as settling onto the couch after a long day, reading a book, studying, traveling, watching television, or winding down before bedtime.

And weighted comfort isn't necessarily just for children.

College students, busy parents, adults, and older adults may enjoy the same simple experience: something soft, warm, and substantial to hold.

What Does the Research Say?

There is legitimate scientific research examining weighted products and deep pressure stimulation, and some studies have reported reductions in anxiety or improvements in certain sleep-related outcomes.

At the same time, researchers have emphasized that studies vary in size, quality, population, and methodology. More high-quality research is needed to understand exactly who benefits most and under what circumstances.

That's why we don't think of Hugglz as medicine.

We think of them as comfort you can hold.

Sometimes a warm hug — even a plush one — is simply a nice thing to have nearby.
